Roofing in Rye

Technically the roofs here are foothills roofs. Practically the constraint is the calendar and the drive.

Rye sits high and small in the Greenhorn valley, and the roofing issues are those of any foothills community: snow, ice at the eaves, ultraviolet at elevation, trees. The Colorado City page covers those in more detail and they apply here too.

What is different about Rye is logistics.

The work window is genuinely shorter

Asphalt shingles need warmth to seal. Up here the reliably warm stretch is shorter than it is down on the plain, and the first and last weeks of it are unpredictable.

That compresses the scheduling year and it means a roof that needs doing “this year” needs booking earlier than you would think. A company that tells you it can fit you in late in the season may be planning to hand seal, which is fine if they say so and a problem if they do not.

Small jobs and long drives

A crew that can do three small repairs in Pueblo can do one up here and spend the rest of the day driving. That is arithmetic rather than reluctance, and it means small work sits lower in the queue.

Two things help. Ask plainly if a small job up here is one they actually want, and accept a frank no over a polite maybe. And group work where you sensibly can, so one trip is worth making.

Replacements are different: a crew is coming for several days either way, so distance matters far less and you will find you have more choice and better pricing on a full job than on a repair.

Weather on the day

A tear off does not begin unless the roof can be dried in before dark, and mountain afternoons do not always cooperate. Expect more schedule movement than you would get in town, and treat a company that refuses to open a roof under a doubtful forecast as careful rather than difficult.

Worth doing

Because getting somebody out takes longer, catching things early is worth more. A look at the boots, the flashing and the eaves each autumn, before the snow, turns emergencies into planned work. An emergency up here in February is the expensive way to do everything.

Tell us what happened

A short note is plenty. If hail or wind came through, give the date: insurers ask for it first.
